Sample manga page with four panels: the hero at a glowing gate, a girl and an old man reacting side by side, and the doors bursting open

Quick answer

Read manga from right to left. Start with the panel at the top right of the page, read the row from right to left, then drop to the next row and start again at its right edge. Bubbles inside a panel follow the same rule: right before left, top before bottom. The whole book runs the same way, so the first page is where an English book would end. Most manhwa and webtoons, and Western comics, go left to right instead. Tap through the sample page below to see both orders on the same panels.

The rules in short

  • Pages: the book opens from what looks like the back, and you turn pages to the right.
  • Panels: top right first. Finish a row right to left, then go down.
  • Tall panels: a panel that spans two rows is read when you reach its top edge.
  • Bubbles: right before left, higher before lower. A bubble that touches two panels belongs to the moment between them.
  • Vertical text: Japanese inside bubbles is often written in columns, read top to bottom, right column first.

How to read manga speech bubbles

Inside a panel, read the bubble that is highest and furthest to the right first, then move left and down. If two bubbles are joined by a little bridge, they are one person speaking in two breaths. A bubble with a tail points to whoever is speaking; a box without a tail is narration, and a cloud-like bubble is a thought. Words drawn straight onto the art are sound effects, which belong to the moment, not to a speaker. In Japanese, the text inside each bubble usually runs in vertical columns, read top to bottom and right column first.

Translated manga usually keeps the right to left order, because flipping the art mirrors the drawings. So even in your own language, read from the right. Not sure which kind of comic you have? Our manga vs manhwa vs manhua guide has a quick identifier.

Questions

Why is manga read from right to left?

Japanese is traditionally written in vertical columns from right to left, so books, pages and panels run the same way.

Where do I start on a manga page?

At the panel in the top right corner. Read that row from right to left, then move down a row and start again on the right.

Is manhwa read right to left too?

No. Most manhwa and manhua are read left to right, and webtoons are read straight down.

How do I read manga speech bubbles?

Top right first, then left and down within each panel. Joined bubbles are one speaker; a box without a tail is narration; a cloud is a thought.

In what order do I read speech bubbles?

Right before left and top before bottom, inside each panel. In manga, vertical text in a bubble is read column by column, starting on the right.

Is translated manga flipped to read left to right?

Usually not anymore. Most translations keep the original right to left order so the art is not mirrored.
